Merck Launches Digital Symptom Checker to Boost Early Detection of Colorectal Cancer Across the Gulf
Merck introduces an online Symptom Checker to help Gulf residents recognize early signs of colorectal cancer, promoting timely medical consultation and reducing late-stage diagnoses.

A Global Science and technology company, Merck has created an educational Symptom Checker in the Gulf region (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and United Arab Emirates) in order to encourage earlier detection and raise awareness for colorectal cancer (CRC). This innovation is targeted towards one of the most prevalent cancers in the region, with significant impact on public health.

The symptom checker is a short survey available online with the intention to help individuals in detecting possible warning indicators associated with colorectal cancer. It will help determine whether or not people should see through with a healthcare provider for further screening based on the responses. Some of the symptoms in which users are questioned about are changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, chronic abdominal pain, inexplicable weight loss, exhaustion, and family medical history.

According to Ahmed Fadl, General Manager for the Gulf at Merck,

“Improving symptom awareness is an essential initial step in addressing colorectal cancer outcomes”. He pointed out that “early identification of possible warning signs can encourage people to seek medical assistance sooner, which may significantly boost treatment success rates”.

The business presented regional data revealing the rising incidence of colorectal cancer in Gulf nations. For example, in the United Arab Emirates, those under 40 account for over 41% of identified cases, highlighting the need for increased awareness and early detection programs. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in Kuwait, making up a sizable share of all cancer cases in the country.

Merck emphasized that the tool is primarily meant to be informative rather than having to diagnose medical conditions. It is designed to lead people into early medical consultation and encourage discussions with medical professionals as regards screening approaches such as colonoscopies or stool-based diagnosis.

With the introduction of the symptom checker, Merck intends to help with health campaigns throughout the Gulf by raising awareness, supporting healthy lifestyle choices, and assisting people in taking proactive measures to recognize cancer earlier.
