OpenAI Brings Local AI Processing to UAE, Giving Businesses More Control Over Data
OpenAI

OpenAI has introduced Inference Residency in the UAE, allowing eligible ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and API customers to process AI model inference on GPUs located within the country.

The move gives organizations more control over where their AI workloads are executed, going beyond local data storage. Under the arrangement, customer content is processed on UAE-based infrastructure, joining the US and Europe as OpenAI’s supported inference-residency regions.

The development could accelerate AI adoption among businesses in regulated sectors such as financial services, healthcare, education, and government, where data sovereignty and compliance requirements can shape technology decisions.

This signals an important shift in the region’s AI ecosystem: infrastructure and data governance are becoming part of the competitive landscape.

As startups move from experimenting with generative AI to embedding it into core products and services, the ability to meet local data requirements could influence where they can sell and scale.
