Kenya’s First Local ETF Opens New Route Into African Banking

Kenya has approved its first locally domiciled exchange-traded fund (ETF), creating a new way for investors to gain exposure to the country’s banking sector without buying individual bank shares.

The WSA Banking Index ETF, developed by Wallstreet Africa Group and Tradiam Asset Managers, will track 11 listed Kenyan banks on the Nairobi Securities Exchange. Its approval comes as banking stocks remain a major driver of Kenya’s equity market, with listed lenders collectively valued at about KSh1.64 trillion.

ETFs can make sector-wide investing simpler by allowing investors to spread exposure across multiple companies through a single instrument. That could help deepen participation in local capital markets while giving businesses another signal that African financial markets are developing more sophisticated investment products.

The move also points to growing opportunities for African asset managers, fintechs and financial platforms to build products around domestic capital markets rather than relying primarily on foreign investment structures.
